Pope Leo XIV on Monday called for the release of imprisoned journalists and affirmed the “precious gift of free speech and the press” in an audience with some of the 6,000 journalists who descended on Rome to cover his election as the first American pontiff.
I know he’s the pope and has to talk like that, but free speech is not a “precious gift”. It’s a hard-won right and “calling for it” is not gonna protect it. I swear to Nonexisto, if this clown gets the credit after the people win the fight, I’m gonna get an aneurism.
Well, i suppose if the free speech in a region has been there for a while, it’s a gift from the people who fought hard for it.
Fair enough. But I’d rather think of it as a torch that has been passed on and has to be guarded and kept ablaze. Lighting it was the hardest part, but the job’s not done.
Thank God he’s not a fascist.
That’s right. I’m relieved the leader of the largest Jesus Christ following religion isn’t a fascist. Because sometimes they are.
Humans suck. But I’ll take a win when we can get it.
Talk is cheap. It’s very easy for him to say these thing. It’s much harder for him to do anything about it.
On the other hand, he could do something about the child exploitation that’s going on in his church.
Being leader of the richest mafia/fishingclub/bureaucracy apperatus should have that as a requirement
How do we know that he isn’t? Musk proclaims a love of free speech and is a fascist. Trump has repeatedly spoken out against wars, but his wars are OK in his book.
Let’s not celebrate until we’ve crossed the river.
Judging by his track record I think he will largely continue Francis’ legacy. Perhaps a bit more conservative than Francis, but I’ve found his statements encouraging for the most part. He’s criticized both JD and Trump in the past, and he seems to be focusing on the more positive Christian teachings like caring for the poor rather than the fire and brimstone wing
Francis’s legacy of doing absolutely nothing and continuing to fund and protect known child abusers?
child abuse is a Catholic tradition, that won’t stop anytime soon.
Judging by his time as the bishop of Chiclayo, yeah I expect that to continue, unfortunately
He’s just Francis but less friendly to the gays
The Catholic Church, an organization that has always been happy with everyone just being able to express their beliefs without persecution.
/s ?
…Yes. Of course.
How could that not be a sarcastic statement?
How could that not be a sarcastic statement?
“The Catholic Church has always loved free speech” is not an extremist position, it’s just factually false. Even people who love the Church acknowledge that the Reformation and Inquisition happened and heretics were burned for expressing “bad” ideas. That people shouldn’t be burned to death for heresy was even one of the statements that got Martin Luther excommunicated.
Already at odds with the Trump administration, I see. This after all Trump did to get him elected!
after all Trump did to get him elected
Wut
Don’t worry, that was the appropriate reaction.
We’re laughing, but Trump is reading this, nodding, saying, “this guy is right. He gets it.”
So the “many people” who say things are saying them sarcaatically?
Trump has already taken credit before that comment
What does Trump think the pope gets?
Lots of kiddy diddling
Oh, yeah that makes sense.
Ok Pope, so where on earth are the most journalists being specifically targeted in military strikes and killed?
If you actually cared about journalists you would be speaking up already, coward.
If you actually cared about journalists you would be speaking up already, coward.
Is this not literally what he did though?
Pope Leo XIV on Monday called for the release of imprisoned journalists
The International Federation of Journalists records that 94 journalists and media workers, including 9 women, have been killed in 2023. Since 7 October, more than one journalist a day has lost their lives during the war in Gaza, a scale and pace of loss of media professionals’ lives without precedent. Publishing ahead of International Human Rights Day, on the 10th December, the IFJ insists that far greater action is required from the international community to safeguard journalists’ lives and hold to account their attackers.

According to the annual report of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), 2024 was another particularly deadly year for journalists and media professionals. As of 10 December 2024, 104 journalists had been killed worldwide, more than half of them in Gaza, Palestine (55). The IFJ reaffirms its determination to see an International Convention for the Protection of Journalists adopted by the United Nations as a matter of urgency.
That is why Pope Leo XIV would speak directly speak about the Palestinian Genocide if he truly cared about journalism and the protection of it and the people who practice it.
Labelling it ‘Middle East and Arab World’ is so fucking disingenuous when it’s Israeli scum butchering journalists. For decades now.
I’m directing this at whomever made the diagram specifically. They can fuck off with that misdirection crap.
So, blatant inaccuracies aside, that doesn’t change the fact that he quite literally did speak up about it, well before your toddler-esque “if he doesn’t say exactly this then he’s against us” rant.
The fact that he said something to begin with is already a step in the right direction. What you’re asking is unrealistic.
“if he doesn’t say exactly this then he’s against us” rant.
I never said this was a binary choice, or that he was against Palestinians, just that this it is cowardly to not mention the genocide where a historic amount of journalists are being killed.
What you’re asking is unrealistic.
Why precisely is it unrealistic?
he… just… got… the… job…
Well he found the time to make prouncements about the importance of journalism and protecting journalism, so why not speaking directly to the genocide where the shocking majority of journalists have been killed for the last 3 years at an unprecedented rate and with incredible, naked murderous aims to specifically assassinate journalists?
Your argument is about priorities and amount of time to devote to them, but it doesn’t even make sense as an argument since the pope ALREADY decided to devote time towards emphasizing how important protecting journalism and a free press is, so fundamentally my argument is one of the way he chose to do the thing, not that he should have done one thing before doing another thing.
Religious zealot says the right thing while keeping his faith in a organization that diddles kids. More at 11.
