U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in regions near Russia in response to threats from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

“I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump said in a social media post that called Medvedev’s statements highly provocative.

He said he ordered the submarines moved “just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances.”

Trump and Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, traded taunts in recent days after Trump on Tuesday said Russia had “10 days from today” to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or be hit, along with its oil buyers, with tariffs.

Medvedev on Monday accused Trump of engaging in a “game of ultimatums” and reminded him that Russia possessed Soviet-era nuclear strike capabilities of last resort after Trump told Medvedev to “watch his words.”

Fuck dude, Medvedev is famous for running his mouth and making these kinds of threats about WWIII, but the logical thing to do would be to just “retaliate” by going through with tariffs before the 10 days to show you won’t be threatened, right?

Instead of Trump playing another game of “You think you’re crazy, I’ll fucking show you crazy…”

This is all just fluff to attempt to switch the narrative from the fact that the Epstein list still hasn’t been released.

Fun trump story. Obama was quoted saying that the military will present you with 2 bad options and the one they want to do. He said once he made them go back and do the work again because of this.

Early in trump’s first term, he chose one of the two bad options (massive cruise missile strikes out of proportion to the event). This says one of two things.

Either trump didn’t know he was being given bad options on purpose… or he did know, and didn’t care, choosing to do a bad thing to make the military give better options.

    Neither would surprise me.

He wouldn’t choose the bad option to get better options.

He’d choose the bad option because it sounds tough or cruel. He can not know and not care.

I was pretty the story would end with, And from then on they always presented him with two good options and the one they want to do.

I was going to say, I hope is more kayfabe. I still don’t like anybody “moving” nukes anywhere as a threat, real or theatrical.

One day he’s going to be the boy who cried wolf, and ended up wiping us all off the face of the earth.

The whole point of a nuclear ICBM submarine is that it can hit anywhere on the planet from anywhere. Moving then closer to their target is stupid.

Subs don’t have the range. On the other hand the point of subs is they don’t know where they are or can’t be sure of how many there are.

Exactly! Why TF is he doing this?

I mean like I know as a distraction, but as far as dangerous and stupid distractions go, this is like a dumb guy swinging around a weapon as a show of force, but if he accidentally “trips” he sets off wwIII.

It’s just harder and harder to comprehend how this man is allowed to keep doing the things he does.

Like the dumbest fucking history being written before our eyes, and there’s nothing we can do to stop him bc he’s in charge.

Probably nuclear powered fast attack submarines, not submarines armed with nuclear weapons, which — for the US — are also nuclear powered.

are nuclear powered submarines and nuclear strike equipped submarines different? do these submarines have nuclear missiles?

      Yes.

The US doesn’t have any meaningful number of submarines not nuclear powered. Almost all are (probably*) nuclear capable if sufficiently equipped.

Specifically, not all nuclear capabilities require ICBM’s. This is a very critical difference. Many fast attacks are fully capable of, albeit more limited nuclear capabilities, than their boomer counterparts, along with more traditional payloads.

      *

in another lifetime I was a submariner on a fast attack. I’m not going to go into great detail beyond this.

There are quite a few diesel subs still in the US. They’re in museums, but they exist. Some are even theoretically operational.
