What we need is an auto pact with China. A tit-fr-tat cross-border supply chain. They make cars in Canada, buy parts from the Canadian supply chain for cars they make in China. and everyone wins.

Their labor standards are a LOT higher than those in the US.

Actually, IBM is doing a LOT of research into chip assembly - in its huge mega-plant in Quebec. Also employing Canadian engineering graduated from Canadian universities to do the research. American universities just can not produce the quality of graduates Waterloo can. Even at MIT, around half of the graduate students are non-American born and educated.

This technology was so highly classified that any mention of it by those developing it would lead to their lifetime incarceration, stated clearly in the non-disclosure agreements they had to sign They could not even mention the theory and general technology behind it. The background tech only came to the public attention when Russia and China started commercializing it, and this forced the Americans to acknowledge it. It was a Russian ice breaker that was the first commercial vessel to use nuclear power, and even at that it was wrapped in military secrecy. But America refused to allow any development on a Western equivalent for ‘military security’ reasons.

But the most effective way for America to completely prevent any development of this nuclear technology was to make it essentially impossible for any commercial outfit to get insurance on these propulsion systems, making it impossible for them to enter any port.

This is actually exactly what is happening in the US, where slave-wage states are substituting cheap labor for high-tech investment. They are opening up obsolete plants and running them on cheap labor. Provides abundant employment, but doesn’t provide a good living for the worker, nor long term security.

On the other hand China is doing the reverse - their labor wage rate is escalating because it is the national priority to move all workers into the middle income group, and companies have to comply or face the wrath of the government.

In China, they invested hundreds of millions in capital into coal fired electrical production, just to provide the energy to get the economy booming. Now they are investing in nuclear and solar, and they are closing down all the coal plants they just built to improve quality of life. They have so much capital available, they can afford to do this, and their government philosophy goes along with it, not only supporting it but demanding it.

We will see which philosophy wins.

These are considered ‘small’ because of their footprint, not just their output. They are absolutely safe, since if they malfunction they just solidify, they do not go into melt down. It is the same technology that is used in the reactors in submarines and aircraft carriers, and believe me, those are SMALL. China is making them small enough to fit in shipping containers, to be shipped and assembled in remote communities. The one Canada is building is, however, on the larger scale of these SMR’s. China is building them by the dozens.

It is actually the technology itself that makes them part of the SMR family - far removed from the technology used in conventional large scale nuclear reactors.

And the fact that they have been used in nuclear submarines for over 50 years does NOT make the technology ‘new’. It is not just ‘talk’, it is proven, built, and tested over decades of continuous use, albeit top secret use.

It was even rumored by engineering students that there was one under the greenhouse of a Canadian university, operated in complete highest-level secrecy, been there since the '80’s. Used in the development of the reactors used in the American submarines. But that was just an unfounded rumor.

Say what you want, this was peer reviewed and an established fact. It attracted the attention of Bezos as an investor. It actually has been reviewed by fusion expert, and definitely not a scam. The Canadian government has already investigated and has funded it. This is reality.

I read a LOT about History, and it seems that the history YOU are reading is ‘Alternate Historical Fiction’, not good sold History. The entire mess between the Western world and China goes all the way back to when the Roman Catholic (Empire) Church and the Pope in Rome (Roman Emperor) forbade the Chinese to honor their ancestors, in the 17’th century (Qing Dynasty). The Jesuits made good infiltration into the Chinese culture, traveling along the Silk Road, in the early 17’th century, bringing knowledge and scientific discovery to the Chinese. Since the Jesuits predominantly focused on God Himself as a universal deity (not the Pope) there was some acceptance by the Chinese peoples to this socialist religion full of compassion, humility, and humanity. On the other hand, when the Pope and the Roman Catholic (Empire) Church got involved, everything switched from worship of God to fielty to the Pope. , The Pope insisted that the only venue for a Catholic, and thus ‘the people’, to seek solace, comfort, moral guidance, and forgiveness was through him (the Pope). The Chinese had a many-thousand-year tradition of seeking moral guidance, comfort, and personal direction from their ancestors. This fit in well with the Jesuit teachings, but was antithetical to the Pope’s need for personal power and domination. There could only be one master over the soul, and that was the Pope. Therefore, the Pope forbade this practice. The Chinese were not to honor their ancestors, but were to honor the Pope instead. Only through the Pope could there be salvation. Honoring one’s ancestors was therefore heretical and blasphemy.

The Chinese, of course, were very resentful that a foreigner, living in a foreign land, who had absolutely no connection to Chinese culture, could tell the Chinese whom they could honor and in what fashion, and so in the 17’th century the Chinese peoples kicked the Roman Catholic (Empire) Church out of China.

Ever since, the Roman Catholic (Empire) Church has had it out for the Chinese. Not just China, but the Chinese themselves. It became a cultural/racial thing.

As a result of the Opium Wars, the Roman Catholic (Empire) Church re-established a toe-hold in China by virtue of conquest, only to be kicked out again in the 1950’s, when the Chinese peoples firmly and thoroughly purged China of all foreign cultural and identity influences, and restored their traditional culture and identity. The problem was not Catholicism, and even Christianity itself, the problem was that the Pope insisted it be entirely controlled by himself, an outsider to China, a foreigner. The Chinese allowed the Catholic Church in China, as long as the entire leadership of the church were Chinese, living in China, respectful of the thousands-of-years cultural identity of the Chinese. It was to be a made-in-China Catholic religion, recognizing Chinese history and precedent… After all, the Chinese cultural religious background and identify are at least twice as old as Christianity.

Most of the Western negative attitude towards China stems from the Roman Catholic (Empire) Church crusade against the Chinese for refusing to bow down to the dictates of the Roman Catholic (Emperor) Pope, and for the refusal of the Chinese peoples to accept the moral, ideological, and ethical authority of a foreign (non-Chinese) power.
