That seems to drive a whole lot of right-wing attitudes. “Everyone is like me, therefore everyone is scary and dangerous.” But without the self-awareness.

Canada needs to turn to other countries for trade, and diversify its economy, not sell its soul to the US fascists.

floofloof@lemmy.caOPto News@lemmy.world•Hotel Guard Barges Into Women’s Restroom, Accuses Lesbian Guest Of Being A Man11·2 days agoThe Liberty Hotel initially defended the guard’s actions in a now-retracted statement, claiming “several guests alerted security about two adults occupying a single bathroom stall” and asserting that a physical altercation occurred. Baker and Victor denied those claims outright.
“If that’s what he thought the issue was once he opened the stall door, obviously there was only one person in there, so it should’ve been case closed,” Victor said. “Let her tie up her shorts and go about her day.”
So the guard actually opened the stall door while she was still using the toilet, found a woman in there, and then stuck around to demand ID to prove she was a woman? What a weird thing to do.

I think the root of the problem is that capitalist society sends students the message that learning is valuable only as a means to make more money. If that’s your view then it makes sense to skip the difficult stuff and just pay for the piece of paper that gives you access to better-paying jobs. Capitalism absolutely doesn’t value having a wiser and more knowledgeable populace, and students pick up on this.

They frequently shut down even good and popular products of their own when they don’t align with some obscure corporate plan. The lesson is that you should never depend on a Google product or service.

floofloof@lemmy.cato World News@lemmy.world•Russian drone strike caused tens of millions worth of damage to ChornobylEnglish2·3 days agoThe attack – quickly concluded to be caused by a drone flying below at a level where it could not be detected by radar – punctured a 15-sq-metre hole in the outer roof. It also caused a particularly damaging, complex smouldering fire to the inner cladding of the structure that took over a fortnight to put out.
When you know that the little hole is 15 metres across,I’m an idiot, but it gives a sense of how huge that structure is.

That was about all I used it for, and it was a bit annoying that Google took it away. It’s odd that these Google-made smartwatches now only support Amazon’s voice assistant.
It’s also reported that Trump’s people are working on suspending habeas corpus. This would remove your right to challenge your arbitrary imprisonment in court. So they will be able to disappear anyone, forever, with no reason and no legal recourse. Effectively Trump will then be an absolute dictator.
