Iran sharply condemned President Donald Trump’s reported plans to start referring to the Persian Gulf as the “Gulf of Arabia” or the “Arabian Gulf” in his latest push to expand his global stamp.

The US love calling itself “America” . the argument I always (from non us people) hear is that “every country uses the last word of it’s name”. So if you change their name, remember to refer to it as " child" and the citizens as children

Apparently we have successfully appropriated the name because no one else in North America would even consider calling themselves Americans.

I suspect it’s the same in South America but I don’t know many people from down there.

I’m from south america. That’s why this thing bothers me

Edit because I now realized I should have said more: correct. No one here call themselves American but not because they deserve it but because it causes confusion. Instead we call you Yankees, because if you say american everyone gives you sideeye

because if you say american everyone gives you sideeye

My first trip to Europe, Met some Candaians and some people from Brazil, casually mentioned we’re all from America. Was told nicely to GTFO of that concept. I feel horrible that we’ve besmirched the name of [the whole/both] fucking continent/s.

I think I’m hitting a bit of a language barrier. What i understand is that they told you not to callt hem Americans? I feel like I need context. I wouldn’t want to be called American in public to avoid confusion. But not in that context

It was something along the lines of well we’re all Americans,

No no no, don’t lump us in there

I’m from the US but we’re all from North America.

Oh, sorry, you know, we don’t really even want to be associated with that term, you guys can have that one

It’s like having neighbors so bad that you don’t even want to mention you’re in the same community

My evil master plan was changing the continent’s name. You can have that one or admit that your “name” is ours too

This a better answer. I always replied “im going to set up a country and name it ‘the country that is not the united states of america’ so that I can be an american too”
