Edit because I now realized I should have said more: correct. No one here call themselves American but not because they deserve it but because it causes confusion. Instead we call you Yankees, because if you say american everyone gives you sideeye
This a better answer. I always replied “im going to set up a country and name it ‘the country that is not the united states of america’ so that I can be an american too”
The US love calling itself “America” . the argument I always (from non us people) hear is that “every country uses the last word of it’s name”. So if you change their name, remember to refer to it as " child" and the citizens as children
