They bought off the feds, so they’ve got years to go. Also, it’s a lot more profitable for shareholders to find a greater fool to sell to than it is to exit the business.

Solar like this on a few percent of the land will supply all the electricity people need. So it looks huge, but is surprisingly low-impact compared with other options, or things like raising cattle

Says1·3 days agoPeople hear about the chemtrails conspiracy theory, look up, see contrails, and then blame them for their cat doing something weird, being attracted to the same sex, headaches, etc because of the conspiracy theory. Some basic knowledge helps avoid that, hence the website describing contrails.

silence7@slrpnk.netOPto News@lemmy.world•Meteorologists Say the National Weather Service Did Its Job in Texas31·9 days agoNo, but its better to understand what happened instead of some fiction being pushed by local officials.
When you do frequent midnight alerts for missing elderly, people disable the alerts on their phone entirely. Then when disaster hits, they don’t know its coming. And because no planning was done for it, they can’t evacuate a camp full of kids quickly enough even if they know what’s about to happen.
Actually preventing this kind of thing means maintaining preparedness for decades when nothing happens.

Wikipedia does a better job of getting that part right:
In April 2014, during a financial crisis, state-appointed emergency manager Darnell Earley changed Flint’s water source from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (sourced from Lake Huron and the Detroit River) to the Flint River.[7] Residents complained about the taste, smell, and appearance of the water. Officials failed to apply corrosion inhibitors to the water, which resulted in lead from aging pipes leaching into the water supply, exposing around 100,000 residents to elevated lead levels.

You’re assuming that the world is covered in server racks. I don’t expect anything like that, even with significant increases in datacenter construction.
Let’s assume 1kw per person. 10 billion people at peak population some time hence. So about 150 billion m2 to provide 1kw per person 24/7. The earth’s surface area is 510.1 trillion m², of which about 1/3 is land. So we’re probably just fine on renewables.
